About Me
Experience

I have 22 years of experience as a primary school teacher.  My job has involved working in and around London as well as Hampshire.  I have taught children from the age of 4 up to the age of 11 although my recent 10 years of experience has taken place in a large Infant school in Hampshire.  My current position as a Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator requires screening and providing interventions for children who are showing signs of dyslexia as well as supporting children with other additional needs.

Dyslexia Interest

My interest in dyslexia developed within my current post as Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator.  Through screening, I encountered many children were displaying difficulties with their reading, writing, spelling and comprehension during their first few years at school.  With reading and writing being such important life-long skills, I wanted to ensure that these children were given every opportunity to achieve their full potential. Asher et al (2004) suggest that "children who get off to a poor start in reading rarely catch up" (p421).  I wanted to make sure that all teachers were trained to spot aspects of dyslexia and that interventions to help these children were in place before they became disassociated with their learning. Screening within the school echoed various research studies depicting that 10% of the population suffer with dyslexia (around 3 children in every class).
